Sign Language Interpreting Services
We provide tailored solutions for the Deaf community
Sign Language interpreting makes communication possible between people who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and people who can hear. This includes interpreting between English and American Sign Language (ASL), oral interpreting, transliterating between spoken English and a form of English based sign language that follows English word order. In addition, we are experienced and skilled in the implementation of tactile interpreting used with the DeafBlind community.
Hayes Interpreting Services, LLC (HIS), is a reliable, professional, and confidential sign language interpreting agency that provides comprehensive communication services. We will work with you to schedule your interpreting needs.

About Us
Welcome to Hayes Interpreting Services, LLC
Hayes Interpreting Services, LLC began business operations in December of 1999. While my primary focus is medical interpreting, I have a diverse working background in many areas of everyday life. My experience extends to business, education, conference, platform, counseling and private settings such as weddings and funerals. I have a strong commitment to customer service and I am actively involved with the Deaf community.
Interpreting is much more than knowing conversational sign language. It is the ability to process information from the source language into the target language, which requires training and years of hands-on experience.
Interpreting also involves knowledge beyond the daily language use of signs. Understanding content is imperative to our work. Research and study of the assigned job is required to successfully communicate the message between the hearing and the Deaf consumers. Our goal is to be sure that the full message is rendered with complete clarity on both sides.
Hayes Interpreting Services, LLC is proud to say we adhere to the Code of Professional Conduct under the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID).
Our dedication to the industry is shown by our membership to the following professional organizations:
RID - Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf
IAD - Iowa Association of the Deaf
ISRID - Iowa State Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf
NAD - National Association of the Deaf
At Hayes Interpreting Services, our interpreters take professionalism to the next level. We know that appearance and conduct on the job are very important, second only to the consumers communication connection. Our customers see and know that along with quality interpreting, our business practices are top-notch!
Why Call A Sign Interpreter?
A clear example of why hiring a professional interpreter is so crucial, is a medical appointment. Communication between medical staff, patient, and family regarding medical care cannot be effective without a qualified interpreter. The Americans with Disability Act of 1990 (ADA) requires full and equal access to health care services and facilities. Failure to establish effective communication with a Deaf or Hard of Hearing patient is first, detrimental to the patient’s health and second, may expose the health care provider to liability issues due to miscommunication.
Why Can't I Write Notes?
American Sign Language (ASL) is not English. As with many foreign languages, English concepts are not directly translatable into ASL. It is a common misconception that ASL is a pantomime of the English language and therefore understood in written form by all Deaf individuals. While this may be the case in some situations, not all people are the same. Written notes will not necessarily convey the intended message.
Why Can't Family Members Interpret?
Family members are not interpreters, nor do they have the skills to interpret all information. In a medical situation, for instance, the complete understanding of terminology may be difficult for the family member to interpret. The Deaf patient’s privacy must also be taken into consideration. HIPAA requirements are in effect during a medical consultation.
Do Deaf People Read Lips?
Actually 40 to 60 percent of English sounds look alike when spoken, so lip reading requires a lot of guesswork. Even the best lip readers only understand 25-30% of what is said to them. 'Hello, how are you?' can be easily understood by using environmental cues, but the intricate details of the rest of the conversation may be missed or misunderstood.
